  1. Fabritius and the Goldfinch Deborah Davis4 starsDonna Tartt s, The Goldfinch, should come with a Read this First arrow pointing toward this kindle single by Deborah Davis Davis gives detailed, entertaining, art history concerning Fabritius and his few extant paintings And, if you are reading on a compatible device, there are live links to many of the paintings that she describes in detail In the last chapter, Davis discusses the recent interest in the painting that was created by Tartt s best se [...]

  2. I found this to be a fascinating story of a picture and artist The novel entitled The Gold Finch about the influence of this picture on a young man was interesting, but the story of the painting and its artist is far interesting I m a fan of the Encore series Raiders of the Lost Art and the story of Fabritius and his relationship and comradeship with Vermeer is mentioned as well as the story of the great explosion that killed Fabritius Fortunately, Vermeer escaped unharmed or we would have lost [...]

  3. I loved this short book about the all too brief life of Fabritius While many might read this in conjunction with Donna Tartt s The Goldfinch as my book club did , and find the parallels between fiction and reality striking, this book is a stand alone view into the greatness of Dutch artists and Dutch culture at the time Deborah Davis has a keen eye and sharp intuition that brings history alive The details of everyday life construct a story that allows the reader to return to the past, to walk al [...]

  4. A decent little biography about an artist of which I knew very little Davis puts a lot of information into this slim book, ranging from what Dutch culture was like when the painting was made to the symbolic history of the European goldfinch I d seen The Goldfinch in Den Haag this December and was charmed by the little painting Looking at the rest of Fabritius s work, I d say it was his best, and I appreciate it all the knowing what I learned from this book.

  5. When reading the book The Goldfinch I really did not know at first whether this was a fictional painting or indeed a real one.The research in this particular book by Deborah Davis enlightened me in a wonderful way The history of the life of the what we nowcall Dutch Masters was interesting to read about Through the research The Goldfinch came alive It was well written and easy topicture life at that time in Holland. It is a good companion book to The Goldfinch.

  6. My friend recommended reading Tartt s The Goldfinch but said I should read this book first I had seen the painting of the goldfinch in Atlanta, in the same exhibit as The Girl in the Pearl Earring I was drawn to the painting had bought a postcard that I placed on my refrigerator along with a magnet of Vermeer s Girl I had also previously read Tartt s The Little Friend knew her as a good author I only hope I enjoy her book as much as I enjoyed this one It was a pleasure to read I finished it very [...]

  7. If you read The Goldfinch and were a bit curious about the painter, this book provides interesting background Even if you didn t read the book, the author gives an interesting account of the art scene in Holland at the peak of it s productivity I never heard of Fabritius before reading the Goldfinch a rather remarkable painter that didn t live long enough to achieve the fame he was due I m glad I read the book.
