  1. Who would have thought that a book that describes a tour of the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline could be so enjoyable The author takes us through his marathon drive that begins in Fort McMurray, Alberta and then goes through Saskatchewan, Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska Great descriptions of the good, the bad and the very ugly The best descriptions were of the many people he interviews during his journey We learn about the lives of the predominantly male workers in the oil sand fields of Albert [...]

  2. Longer than a magazine article, but shorter than a book, this is a great example of how and why digital publishing makes sense, despite the author s complaints in the Op Ed pages of the NY Times I ordered it after reading his essay, and I enjoyed reading it I don t accept his premise that he was somehow cheated when his e publisher went under at least with , he could publish it himself and find an audience Which he has The story is fascinating at times, with descriptions of the hellish landscape [...]

  3. This is a pretty good book, overall It gives a lot of insight on the pipeline issue and how it would affect the people along its route I actually planned to rate it 5 stars until I got to a part of the book where Horwitz s liberal bent came through Before that, I felt he was doing a good job of keeping it objective, but then his liberalness crept in here and there and that sort of tainted the whole thing from then on I realize the temptation is huge, but real journalists should be neutral in the [...]

  4. I first heard about the Keystone XL Pipeline through Mr Horwitz s rather complainy pants article on the NY Times about trying to publish online However, I was intrigued enough by the subject matter to download a sample, then buy the book.I can now recommend the book highly I had no idea this pipeline was in progress I commend the author for interviewing so many people, both executives and just regular Joes, who were debating over selling easement access Some opposing, some acquiescing. My only re [...]

  5. The author follows the existing and proposed route of the Keystone XL pipeline from Alberta to Nebraska, interviewing folks on both sides of the issue on the present and future effects of the project A quick read, it probably won t change your mind about much of anything, but it does present a snapshot of the lives of some of the folks affected and the mid western milieu through which the pipeline travels Moderately entertaining I liked his book retracing the voyages of Captain Cook Blue Latitud [...]

  6. These book presents the facts of the boom the destruction and desecration of the environment, the negative, detrimental impact on the environment, society, and the individual This boom benefits humanity for a limited period of time, shifts environmental degradtion from one country to and through another country. The fiction That this boom is a great thing us Is wonderful That any pipeline will not hurt those along its path, when people in the managerial strata of oil company s don t want the pipe [...]

  7. The book has great potential as it involves the author visiting various Oil Boom Towns and giving an insight into what the working conditions are and what life is like in a boom town. The only problem is that the author fails to execute it very well It isn t very engaging or funny, there aren t enough insights into the lives of people working there and too much of the book is spent discussing pollution so it feels like a university dissertation showing a balanced argument for and against Overall [...]

  8. This was an interesting story written in a manner that is easy to follow and entertaining I enjoy the author s style having previously read Confederates in the Attic.
