  1. the need to have read Cryptonomicon prior to starting the Baroque Cycle I not only don t believe it necessary, I m not even convinced it s preferable Yeah, it s kind of nifty the author made an effort to tie the two together, but as far as I m concerned, the two works don t lose a thing by being taken entirely separately Even heretical, I found the connection to be sort of gimmicky Lastly, if for some reason you have to chose between the two, you absolutely must make the Baroque Cycle your choic [...]

  2. An excellent book sequence, which I read with great pleasure in its lovely first edition when it came out I enthusiastically give five stars to the book but I wanted to reread it and got the Kindle edition for convenience It is very disappointing maps and illustrations are unreadable, italics in the original are missing, long names are sometimes hyphenated in the middle of a line, and, most annoying, footnotes are completely missing, at least on my Kindle Paperwhite they are available on the tab [...]

  3. I m not going to lie, this is a long book Book 1 if you buy the whole Baroque Cycle in one volume like me, it s still divided into 3 books drags at the beginning but if you ve read the Cryptonomicon first, some of the last names will be familiar, just slog through the first couple of chapters, it s worth it Book 2 at one point was broken in to 2 separate books as well so the dynamic is different but I like that they were combined so that the timeline of events is whole I love Mr Stephenson s wri [...]

  4. The Baroque Cycle is a 3 book epic 2256 total printed pages surrounding 3 main fictional characters interacting with real life people from about 1660 to 1715 It covers a lot of European especially British history It s filled with historical events and people such as Isaac Newton, Christopher Wren, Kings James, Charles, George of Britain, King Louis of France, and Prince William of Orange It is extremely well written, well researched, and engaging It gives the reader a great feel for life in thos [...]

  5. I really want to love these books, but they are simply too long winded There are sections that are just brilliant, characters I find entirely captivating, and dialogue and soliloquies that I reread simply to enjoy the originality of thought and expression And then there are sections that I m literally skipping over because I just need for the story to progress The plot is very convoluted and takes off in seemingly unrelated directions at times I think most of it comes looping back around, but th [...]

  6. This seems to be an exercise is how long a book can be written around a few good characters You could, and I recommend, starting at book 3 and be prepared to skip many pages

  7. Neal Stephenson is the greatest living writer Here veering mostly from his futuristic scifi , he presents a broad view of 17th and 18th century Europe, featuring Louis 14, the last of the Tudors and first of the Hanovers, Isaac Newton, Wilhelm Leibniz, and the geniuses of the English enlightenment, along with tales on the origins of trade, money, religion, puritans, the birth of the stream engine and computer, and of course cryptography It is stunning in its scope and characters and provides a f [...]

  8. First off, even though this is a trilogy packed into a single volume this story is LONG I usually read fast, and these 3 books took me as much time to read as all of ASOIAF Each book within itself is a very long book, and you will have points when you are plodding through wondering why Stephenson isn t getting on with it However, as with all Stephenson books, there is a reason for this that just may not be resolved until much later Regardless of the length, the ride that this story takes you on [...]

  9. A great collection, and the kindle version is much easier, not to mention lighter to scamper away to Cuba for 10 days to get some sun, I am Canadian and the temp today is 16c, I have no idea what it is in American.
