  1. I read The Naturalist as part of an First choice and promptly decided to read books by Andrew Mayne I enjoyed Angel Killer I am buying the sequel but thought Angel Killer had quite a few dubious plot points The writing is very strong and keeps the story moving at a rapid pace I finished it in a day.Good Jessica Blackwood is an interesting character with interesting thoughts and backstory Jessica is a strong, tough woman Magic is fun Damian is charming and wickedBad Jessica seems somewhat stupid [...]

  2. Step right up, folks, and enjoy the show I m quickly learning that Andrew Mayne is first and foremost and entertainer, using creative licence to produce books that are as fun as they are thrilling His books tend to be a bit quirky, original, slightly over the top but darkly entertaining This is my second book by this author and I already can t wait to move on to the next. The cast of characters is no less original than the story There is a serial killer using grand illusions as part of his MO, a [...]

  3. I like the concept of this novel, a magician illusionist Jessica Blackwood working as an FBI agent to solve mysteries too far out of the box for normal investigation The hard part is to put together a plot where her talents can be used and still make it both exciting and believable Mayne almost gets it right He has crafted a book with interesting characters, but the plot, though original and entertaining, doesn t quite do the premise justice Enter Damien, an ex boyfriend of Jessica s she met at [...]

  4. I found the premise, a magician looking for tricks done by the villain to be a refreshingly unique way to approach a story This was a plot device that I had not seen before. The characters were nicely drawn and I ve already ordered the sequel I did have two problems with the story though 1 her friend Damian is able to do and predict things that are beyond belief, no matter how much I m willing to suspend normal space and time rules 2 the conclusion was done in 20 pages where a experienced writer [...]

  5. Spoilers I gave 4 stars because it kept me reading late into the night but left off one star for some pretty frustrating omissions Things like the fact that Jessica described the elaborate fingerprint trick Damian used to pretend he was William Shatner but Jessica never mentioned it as a way that the pilot fingerprints could be a match for the dead pilot from the 40s And why didn t they check the footage for who bought tickets at the Empire State Building at the time stamp on the ticket in the a [...]

  6. I read this book immediately after reading the girl beneath the water by the same author Can see where he has honed his craft since this was written I still find he writes well as a woman , the characters do have gaps but it is a novel and i liked the magical concept Again a book i could see visually unfolding before me this one would make a TV series, light hearted , no sex, no real violence just a ripping yarn.

  7. I am a huge fan of Andrew Mayne s books, and this one didn t disappoint either Kept me guessing as to how things were done, gave me chills as I was reading and gave me a full range of emotions to feel I felt there were a few unanswered questions that I had and, after discussing this with my boyfriend we buddy read sometimes he agreed there d been a few things that seemed to have been missed dropped. All in all, another great book from Mayne and I m on to the second book right now
