  1. The Bridges at Toko Ri is an early James Michener novel about the Korean War, and about the men who were sent to fight it Harry Brubaker, a veteran of the Second World War, was a lawyer with a family when the war started and the Navy recalled him to active duty He left behind his family, his friends and his neighbors, to fly terrifying and dangerous missions over Korea. When we first meet Harry Brubaker, he is ditching in the cold ocean after a mission He ll be rescued by an Irish helicopter pilo [...]

  2. Finally got around to reading my first James Michener novel, and it s a doozy A stirring tribute to heroism and sacrifices of U.S Naval aviators of the Korean War, with thrilling action scenes and compelling characters LT Harry Brubaker, green hat wearing Mike, Beer Barrel, Cag, the Admiral, etc alike from the introduction by Steve Berry They were poor, barely able to put food on the table His classmates, and even a teacher or two, tormented Michener about the secondhand clothes and toeless snea [...]

  3. It s a bit ironic that James Michener is known for his many 1,000 page epics, as this particular novel is probably the shortest novel that I ve ever read A whopping 85 pages Maybe when this book was released 1953 a book this size was of the norm Buying it almost 70 years later, I can honestly say that I sure am glad that I bought it at a discounted price Paying regular price for this thing would have been quite the rip off Not only was the story short, but I really didn t think it was that good [...]

  4. It s a heartbreaker A short fictional description of the horrors of the Korean War Michener, as always, is a superb story teller BTW, there is a village called Toko Ri, just outside the gates of Camp Hovey in the 2nd Infantry Division s AO But Michener s bridges are fiction and have no relationship to the actual village Somehow Michener uses this one episode of an Air Force pilot to give us a picture of the awesome misery of that war You don t need to know much else about this tragic event in ou [...]

  5. In this day of cruise missiles, it s a good look at how tough it was to go after some of these hardened and protected targets with dump bombs. There were some cheesy parts i.e the helicopter rescue pilot and his top hatHaving seen the movie trailer, I see Mickey Rooney played the part of the helo pilotwith a green top hat versus the helmet and headphones he actually would have been wearing.

  6. The book is billed as a 100 odd pages but this included a 15 page introduction and lots of blank pages or pages containing non essential information The actual story is told in a mere 83 pages Somehow I was expecting a really thick book given the age of the original Nevertheless, this is a superb story and it is clear that the film of the same name follows the book religiously In my view though it is overpriced for what is basically a pamphlet sized offering.
