  1. I really enjoyed the preceding books in the Shetland series, but although I read every last page of Dead Water, I never got engaged.Too much boring detail about energy sources, too many characters, most with dull jobs, too many interviews that felt pointless The interplay between Jimmy Perez and the new woman inspector from Inverness was mildly interesting The secret affairs from the past contributed some prurient interest But the investigation felt slow The motive for murder seemed questionable [...]

  2. I m a big admirer of Ann Cleeves and have enjoyed the Shetland Island series tremendously Like most Cleeves fans, I was happy to see her return to the Shetland locale and looked forward to the revival of principal, Jimmy Perez Dead Water gets off to a fine start, with wonderful descriptions of the austere and dramatic landscape and the contemporary post oil boom status of the islands A murder is committed early on and brings the introduction of the main characters including a still grieving Pere [...]

  3. In the opening pages of Dead Water we learn that Perez s fianc e has died in the autumn, in a storm that battered his Fair Isle home , etc Then in Chapter Six, we learn how his fianc e got caught up in a murder investigation on Fair Isle, how she d been stabbed by a psycho and how Jimmy blamed himself etc.I ll be honest I m only here reading this series because of 3 things the television show the Shetland Islands and Douglas Henshall Cleeves does one thing really well leaves you parked inside ju [...]

  4. Reporter Jerry Markham returns to the Shetland Islands chasing a story, or did he Was he murdered because of his story or was it personal There are numerous suspects Detective Inspector Willow Reeves is brought in to supervise the investigation A still grieving Jimmy Perez brings his investigating skills forward After a number of twists and turns the suspect is apprehended On the plus side, I really enjoyed Willow Reeves I was a bit disappointed in the ending I d explain why but that would be a [...]

  5. There is something unique about this series, set in the Shetland Islands off England The descriptions of the sea, the scenery, the houses, and the quaint and mostly quiet lifestyle are helpful in creating the setting Our inspector hero is back after battling depression ensuing from the death of his lady love He gingerly gets back into investigating two murders after taking time off to recover, all the while continuing to take care of her daughter, Cassie, because the natural father doesn t want [...]

  6. Just finished a second read of the Shetland series comfort food for the soul during the pandemic , and it remains one of my absolute faves Cleeves is brilliant with plotting and just as skilled in character development I LOVE these people and spending time with them Also, Kenny Blythe s narration is brilliant I adore the Scots accent really felt like I was in Shetland and his character differentiation and various other accents are wonderful The narration elevated the entire book.

  7. I have never been to the Shetlands If I was asked about favourite books I would put this one very high on the list Cleeves brilliantly creates a community living in the British Isles but seemingly far away from the amenities of urban life where within the community there are invisible walls which discourage outsiders from invading the privacy of the inhabitants even for a murder case Willow is a wonderful creation She is a bit like VERA STANHOPE because she does not fit in to what one would expe [...]

  8. Well written and engaging, I particularly liked the way she painted the new characters and yet showed development in the regular characters Sandy maturing, the fiscal in trouble etc Good measured pace, fitting the feel and scenery of Shetland.Great shame though that the author elected to turn Perez into a depressive following his IMHO entirely unnecessary bereavement in the previous book Think of the lead detective in BBC TV Wales Hinterland series I gave up watching that as a result Why do crim [...]
