  1. You are my muse, and from here it begins. All students need mentor texts, pieces of writing that can be entered again and again for different purposes even adult writers Especially adult writers because we come to the page with a litany of bad habits, preconceived notions of how the story should be told, and muddled ideas about its situation, or what we gleaned from the experience having removed ourselves from the intimacy of that moment in time.Enter stage right THE SITUATION AND THE STORY, a se [...]

  2. Well, life is busy, but I opened the book said I have time to read one story It began so smoothly like the beginning of the movie To Kill a Mockingbird and Scout Finch starts talking She just draws you in and connects her life to yours I read the story He and I and I can t wait to read It s here with me at work now and I wish I could go off in a corner and read I m sure I will learn something useful from Vivian Gornick s book besides being enchanted by the stories.

  3. Though there were gems of knowledge interspersed throughout, the book lacked cohesive, overall analysis in the last section There was the chance to compare all the works and include a litany of takeaways, yet the last section was short rather than long I was hoping for synthesis of the material chosen for this work, as well as tactical wisdom from this uber experienced teacher of writing.I was disappointed by the dated book selection and by the lack of awareness of having chosen exclusively whit [...]

  4. It feels disrespectful to offer anything but praise for a book that captured the distance it takes to execute memoir pieces successfully For writers wrangling with their personal material, trying to turn it into an engaging narrative that along the way may enlighten the reader, this is the premiere text My purpose was to know what it took and this book describes the process with convincing clarity What I did not enjoy about the book was its format It was organized like a text with samples of mos [...]

  5. If you are interested in the process of writing this is a good book I am not sure I always agree with her assessments of various writers Oscar Wilde for example but Gornick is thoughtful and probing She speaks with knowledge and experience on one of the most slippery facets of writing the narrator s voice This may be one of the very best books on the subject.

  6. I ve read many books on writing, but this is one of the best I ve ever read for personal essay and memoir Gornick really gets to the heart of what we who write from personal experience need to accomplish It will make you go back and look again at your writing and see where you ve missed or where you ve succeeded Highly recommend it.

  7. I bought this book because Vivian Gornick is an excellent nonfiction writer It was recommended as a good critique of the process of writing informal personal essays and memoirs Her discussion of what makes a good personal essay was excellent How the essay and the memoir are different forms was cogent and insightful I highly recommend this book as one of several which can educate writers on how to go about writing personal, and experiential, pieces.

  8. There is the situation, and there is the story, and if you can figure out the basics behind that seemingly innocuous statement, then you can figure out how to be a very effective memoir writer Only about half of this book is about memoir writing, and I got it specifically for that portion The essay portion, while fine, did little for me I would definitely overall recommend this book.

  9. An exploration of what is involved in writing a good memoir or essay Gornick has two keen insights into what makes personal narrative work, in brief first, create an honest, detached narrator oneself, but honest and detached than the person who is living your life , and second, understand the difference between situation and story The situation, she says, is the context or circumstance, sometimes the plot the story is the emotional experience that preoccupies the writer the insight, the wisdom, [...]
