  1. This book came up on my book club list, so as per my usual, I didn t read the back blurb, had no idea the subject matter or even who the author was, I just started reading I like that this book was written from the viewpoint of the 13 year old son You get a front row seat on how a horrible crime against his mother affected him and his family About two chapters in, I decided to look up the author because I wanted to check to see whether it was a female or male author because the teen s voice seem [...]

  2. I initially gave The Round House 3 stars It is a good read, with some excellent characterization and I read it at a decent pace and enjoyed it while doing so However, when I was done with it, I was like well, that was good, what s next I was hoping for it to induce than that in me After discussing it with my book club, I moved up my opinion of it I am content to give it 4 stars in the end.The good thing about this novel is that the suspense builds nicely, the story is an interesting one, and Erd [...]

  3. The Round House is a good read It is hard to say I enjoyed the book because of the subject matter But the subject matter needs to be told and talked about I needed to keep reading this story because the young boy, Joe, age 13, who told the story The author did a great job of letting us into the feelings of Joe after the tragedy that befalls their family His close knit extended family, friends and community are vital to his coping with this tragedy I also have a better picture of what the Native [...]

  4. There are some great Native American authors writing today, and I am happy to have just discovered another This writer knows her people, their history, their institutions family, clan, tribe , and their contemporary circumstances The resulting reality is profound.Few writers have the affinity or the empathy to create a narrator of the opposite sex, much less an adult male narrating as a thirteen year old who thinks and acts as Joe does.Through Joe s story she tells many stories full of wonderful [...]

  5. An idyllic boyhood with good friends and family goes astray when 13 year old Joe s mother is viciously attacked The cast of characters Erdrich builds are almost all members of the Chippewa Ojibwa nation living on the reservation in North Dakota Each is constructed so richly, spot on in believability and consistency, yet so varied, that the entire story holds together as true While alerting us to the travesty of ridiculous tangle of laws governing Indian reservations that make their ability to go [...]

  6. I d never heard of the author before and to be honest I ve only read a few books that feature indigenous people I decided to read this because the blurb made it sound like a good and it has some glowing reviews I was not disappointed The Round House is all kind of harrowing I was impressed by the fact the narrator Joe is only thirteen years old Joe comes across as very mature and the way he deals with the terrible crime committed against his mother reduced me to tears The most harrowing thing is [...]

  7. This book was powerful and moving A must read Louise Erdrich is an incredible storyteller.I read it before the other books in the Justice series 1 Plague of Doves, 3 LaRose and it didn t make too much of a difference, but people and events from The Round House made even sense when I read Plague of Doves.Support Native writers.
