  1. I always enjoy this authors writing I did, however, make the mistake of reading this one out of sequence with the ongoing Dalhousie stories and so was somewhat confused by a few of the relationships mentioned in the book.In this one, as per her usual, Isabel is musing on the nature of relationships, who is doing what with whom, who is talking about it honestly and who is not She gets to the bottom of her puzzle eventually and I realize I need to check the book order for this series and get back [...]

  2. This is the first of the Isabel Dalhousie stories or novels that I ve read, and I wondered after I d read it where I ve been This short story by Alexander McCall Smith that takes place in Scotland, The Perils of Morning Coffee turned out to be an excellent piece of writing, and the character of Isabel Dalhousie is humorous and very likeable Isabel is a philosopher and works for the journal Review of Applied Ethics as its editor I found Isabel s conversations with other characters to be very inte [...]

  3. What harm could an innocent meeting for morning coffee bring to a quiet life of a philosopher When a computer glitch schedules Isabel Dalhousie for a coffee meeting with a professor from the nearby university, she decides to meet with him despite the initial mistake Initially glad in her choice, for she finds in him a kindred spirit, she comes to later regret it when his wife unjustly accuses her of carrying on an affair with her husband Isabel is hurt by the accusation and, as usual, cannot lea [...]

  4. While I think the price is a little high for a short story, I enjoy this series so much I eventually bought it anyway And sure enough, I loved it I did guess the ending, but that didn t matter.Getting to step into Isabel s world was a lovely experience This series has become very special to me for the quiet, thoughtful tone and excellent writing I always know I can just open a book and relax but still think I don t always agree with the characters decisions and thoughts, but I always end up thin [...]

  5. I am a self confessed Alexander McCall Smith fan I especially like his No 1 Ladies Detective Agency books, though I began reading him with his Isabel Dalhousie series. If you ve not read any of the Dalhousie novels before, you may be slightly at sea with the main characters, since this is a short story or novelette, and we don t get much, if any, introduction to them For readers of the series, however, they will feel familiar, and opening this little book will be like stepping into an old friend [...]

  6. This is a VERY short story and I am sure that it is taken from one of the Isabel Dalhousie books, and re issued on its own, because I have definitely read it before As a measure of it s length, the taster of the next novel at the end is half as long as the story itself When I have time, I m going to go through my books and find out where I ve previously read it, and will add details to this post.I think that the practice of re issuing books under another title, or of issuing snippets like this w [...]

  7. I m a fan of this author s No 1 Ladies Detective Agency Series but this is the first story I ve read featuring Isabel Dalhousie I enjoyed reading the story but found I was having to consciously slow down my reading speed in order to appreciate the philosophical asides This is not a criticism because I actually found those asides of interest and worth thinking about I liked the gentle humour and the huge knowledge of human nature this author displays. If you re not sure whether the Isabel Dalhousi [...]
