  1. I have little in common with Yang or the subjects of the essays I ve read by him He tends to deal with the experience and treatment of the Asian American male within the framework of contemporary America, and I m a white woman To me, the appeal of his writing is its unflinching honesty, originality, and Yang s own voice Perhaps, too, it s that his common theme of the Outsider speaks to me personally I think even , though, is that for all of his raw It is the voice, the talent, of a real writer M [...]

  2. This is a beautifully written essay which successfully bridges the plight of eccentric ugly losers with the literate, privileged world that scorns them and then is baffled when one of them decides to suicidally take vengeance.

  3. Yang s writing is reminiscent of James Baldwin s in the way it uses personal memoir as a tool to explore issues in the larger culture Here Yang gives readers a superbly written and nuanced perspective on the cultural and social contexts of ostracization and he balances it with his own experiences as a member of a demographic group whose capacity for intimacy is either denied or ignored Absolutely excellent essay I only wish it were longer.

  4. Hard to pin down what exactly this essay is about In short tells the tale of the modern American loser not the essentially lovable nerd of romantic comedies, but the kind of young man that makes young women want to file police reports Yang draws from his own experiences to express what it s like growing up as someone essentially unlovable , friendless and lonely Excellent essay, can t recommend it enough.

  5. Yang communicates his insight laden analysis with brevity and wit This was the 1st of the kindle singles I have sampled, and it left me with a favorable impression of the category.

  6. I was very disappointed with this Kindle single I thought it would be about Seung Hui Cho and his life, or at least details of what happened Barely even 20% of the story is about him at all This is a story about the author, his friends and acquaintances and some strange discussions about match, gay bashing, and men that go without ever having sex Maybe I missed something, but the whole thing felt very strange and I fail to see how any of the author s tales relate to Seung Hui Cho.
