  1. I fell in love with Claude from the beginning, the way he fell for his music I could totally understand him There is not a moment that I do not have music going on inside me, so I can understand him, only he is so much than I could ever be The book is totally captivating on every level Whether you like love music, understand the time in which the story plays, the Manhattan that once was, even the horrors of the past, it all comes to life miraculously I could not put the book down, and missed qui [...]

  2. Enjoyed Body and Soul immensely and have recommended to others Perhaps my judgment is partially colored by fond memories of living in NYC at the same time as the time frame of this book, but even so, it is than just the era and the setting Not only is the reader always rooting for Claude, the young musical prodigy, but also all the other characters are believable, and often downright entrancing, as is the plot Who could ask for There is some technical stuff about the mechanics of composing and p [...]

  3. Piano geeks will adore this one, rich with minute details about the development of a young musician I was surprised to read that the author was not a pianist himself but only got his deep insight thru research Claude s childhood aches with poverty, deep loneliness and an unloved existence until he discovers his prodigious talent for music He stumbles upon a series of gifts from the universe a loving mentor who finally parents the lonely child, a benefactor who gifts him a rare and well crafted p [...]

  4. The writing is exquisite The story draws you in, but ultimately, there was too much written about music and its processes Claude is poor but quickly becomes rich in so many ways But not much in the way of drama here There was a lot of New York kitsch A zany mother adds to the story If you have a musical background, this book is for you The storyline sometimes got a bit bogged down in the musicality I did not finish the book as I could not get past the music stuff editor, please and the main char [...]

  5. You don t have to be a musician to like this book, but it doesn t hurt It gives a believable representation of what a supremely talented person could be like giving both the best parts and some of the constraints of what being that focused might bring In some ways the book is like a puzzle, with some of the pieces easy to find and others recognized at a later point After the first few chapters it is almost impossible to put down I haven t read anything this good in years.

  6. Body and Soul, by Frank Conroy, is without a doubt the finest writing about the process of becoming a musician, and the experience of being a musician, that I have ever read The story begins by introducing Claude, a very young boy growing up in impoverished surroundings, whose prodigious talent is as yet unrecognized by anyone with sufficient musical understanding and means enough to support that talent and help it grow Step by step the story follows a growing Claude as he is introduced into and [...]

  7. When I started this book I could not put it down I read until late in the night and was angry I couldn t continue I got up earlier than usual, made my coffee and started again I was totally engrossed in the world of Claude. This book was so well written that I felt I was shadowing the characters I could see them and hear their conversations and became one in their world I rooted for them, suffered with them and shared their accomplishments When Claude s mentor and surrogate father died, it was se [...]

  8. I first encountered this book about 10 15 years ago, when I was a beginning piano student Music is a huge part of my life, and I can t imagine life without it This coming of age story is about an unlikely musical prodigy who stumbles upon music and a dear man who shepherds him through figuring out his prodigious gifts The story pulls you in from the first pages, such that you resent any time away from reading it But what has left me in awe each time I have read it is the awesome ability of the a [...]

  9. Claude Rawlings carries a good luck charm Almost without exception he s a calm person, patient, and even before big piano recitals he s rarely nervous He has a routine Body and Soul by Frank Conroy is a novel about the development of a young musician The narrative is in three acts Claude s boyhood, his teen uni and early professional years, while the third part covers his established professional life It spans a period of almost 20 years.Claude s childhood is unenviable It s the late 1940s no fa [...]
