  1. The first book in the Shetland series is an excellent work by Ann Cleeves I found the BBC series Shetland first, and came to the books much later My wife calls these types of shows my people with accents in dreary locations solving murders I actually started this book once, only got a few pages in, and didn t pick it up again for several months as I was somewhat concerned it would detract from my enjoyment of the TV series While it is always interesting to see what the producers decided to chang [...]

  2. I have two favorite genres, mysteries and historical fiction I m not a high volume reader due to lack of time I read in small snippets as I can, savoring this time for escape and relaxation My time, my world, my pleasure As I started to read, I was on the train I was reading another book as well I had never read this author I can only say, it grabbed me the setting, Detective Perez, the collection of well developed characters, the underlying psychological themes, the underbelly of human nature, [...]

  3. You may want to choose one or other watching BBC S Shetland with Douglas Henshall Same basic stories told a little differently with each medium, e.g novel versus video Enjoyed them both but SPOILER ALERT I found Ann Cleeves construction of her character, D I Jimmy Perez, less appealing then the BBC s series based on this novelOverall this is a good read for fans of detective police dramas set in the U.K Definitely a series to spend quality time with

  4. I m amazed that this has gotten so many good reviews The language is so clumsy I m teed off at the writing of it and I m not even a quarter of the way into it For example How did they get on Perez asked Did you have any sense of tension, friction It must be hard for a man bringing up a teenage girl Just the wrong age They re rebellious then anyway And they hate being different What Huh A teenager is the wrong age for a parent For a guy Is that what the author is saying All teens are just rebelli [...]

  5. Isn t it wonderful to find a new series that you really like I did that when I read Raven Black, first book in the Shetland Island Quartet by Ann Cleeves The story is well done in many ways It is told from several points of view with a chapter break delineating each We get in the mind of many of the people around the Shetland Island Cleeves doesn t spend lots of time in each point of view, but enough for us to get a feel for the story and the people. The author introduces us to her protagonist de [...]

  6. As a follower of the DCI Vera Stanhope novels, I am an admirer of Ann Cleeve s gift for portraying life in a remote and settled insular community, particularly how it is affected by the occurrence of a horrific crime in their midst Cleeves has a knack for shedding light on the undercurrents that run throughout a small community, even one where people have lived side by side for much of their lives and the differentiation between islanders born and bred Shetland stock and outsiders, remains so ma [...]

  7. This is the first in Anne Cleeves Shetland series Although I love crime novels, I had not read any of this author s books before, but I am pleased that I finally did get around to it, as this was an excellent book, with interesting characters and a good setting. When sixteen year old Catherine Ross is found murdered by Fran Hunter, the crime brings back old memories to the residents of the island For eight years ago, another little girl went missing and her body was never found At the time, Magnu [...]
