  1. I purchased the Kindle edition of this book For 0.99 what could possibly go wrong Here s what There is apparently no definitive version of the Gilgamesh epic The Kindle version is a scholarly discussion of the various tablets that have been unearthed by archaeologists over the years Nowhere does the actual epic appear except in small excerpts Very disappointing.

  2. I started book not knowing what is Lapis Lazuli After reading word 20 time I finally look it up It pretty blue rock from middle east.My favorite part when Enkidu make intimate with girl Also, when Gilgamesh wear lion skin Favorite character is Humbaba I will name my next dog Humbaba Utnapishtim is like awesome guy who survive flood Some people say Utnapishtim is Noah, but don t think they look the same based on pictures I ve seen.Sumerian things is really awesome Everyone should read Gilgamesh a [...]

  3. First, a word of warning if you want a scholarly edition, look elsewhere There is no complete extant version of the epic of Gilgamesh, and the cuneiform tablets that reached us are or less damaged, so there are many gaps in the story What the great N K Sandars did was to compile a full narrative based on tablets from different times and places Each of these, if complete, would probably reveal a story very different in detail from the one we have here In short, this is a patchwork. But what a patc [...]

  4. Needed it for a college class Make sure you buy the right copy of this book because there are different translations and formats This particular version could be better because the print is pretty small and close together on the page where other versions have pages with bigger font.

  5. First point, buy it Many of the topics covered in this book I have been thinking about for quite some time and then I ran into this book just by chance I was eager to get it after reading some advanced sections It is educational and enlightening Difficult to put down once you start reading Exceptional, detailed explanations on leviathan, behemoth, flying serpents, cosmology, seven days of creation, lifespans, and others I never did quite believe in early man living for hundreds of years Lots of [...]

  6. If you want to read the first written story ever, then this is it I give it five stars because the story stands the test of time and traveled through all the ages to reach us Ishtar is my favorite character she s a bold Goddess and totally gets the shaft from Gilgamesh, who abused his own people, so she basically launches a tirade against him The story is interpreted to make Ishtar look greedy and wanting too much from her sexual partners, but she is simply an archetype of a strong woman who sta [...]

  7. By reviewing every available version of the epic, combining them so as to do away with any significant gaps in the story,, and transforming the rather stilted verse into smoothly flowing prose, the epic becomes far readable I would recommend this edition to any teachers and professors introducing their students to Gilgamesh, or to the curious lay reader interested in literature or history

  8. I bought this for my daughter for a school project and she enjoyed the book which means a she either lied or b is kind of a nerd, or c both The good news is we still have the book at home.

  9. A little heavy going on occasion, but just shows where the Bible got many of its ideas Anyone who takes the Bible literally should read this and get wise.

  10. i first read about the discovery of the epic of Gilgamesh in a book called Gods Graves and Scholars by C W Ceram a cracking read on the adventures of the early archaeologists The Gilgamesh epic is essentially the story of the Biblical flood from a different perspective i do like these tales from the ancient world
